چکیده

We investigate the steady motion of solid particles through successive jumps over a horizontal, rigid, bumpy bed driven by shearing viscous fluid in absence turbulence, lubrication forces and collisions above bed. employ discrete element method for coupled to mean field continuum model run quasi-two-dimensional simulations that we compare with predictions simple which assumes all follow identical periodic trajectories determined intensity compatible previously suggested laws relating particle velocities before after impact solve both numerically analytically, identify solutions are linearly stable small perturbations. show qualitative quantitative agreement simulations, as long number moving system is not too large. The further reveal there two distinct families trajectories, actually good representation more energetic particles, spend most their time upper flow layers where they can gain momentum from flow.

Collapse of granular-liquid mixtures over rigid, inclined beds.

This work deals with the propagation of granular-liquid waves over rigid beds, originated by the sudden removal of a sluice gate in a rectangular, inclined flume. In particular, we experimentally investigate the role of the initial volume ratio of granular material-monodispersed plastic cylinders-to water, the flume width, and the bed roughness on the time evolution of the granular front. Due t...

A Hybrid Particle-Mesh Method for Viscous, Incompressible, Multiphase Flows

A hybrid method to simulate unsteady multiphase flows is described. One phase is represented by moving particles and the other phase is defined on stationary mesh. The flow field is discretized by a conservative finite volume approximation on the stationary mesh, and the interface is automatically captured by the distribution of particles moving through the stationary mesh. The effects of surfa...

Granular Segregation in Collisional Shearing Flows

This paper considers segregation in collisional granular shearing ows from the experimental, computational, and theoretical standpoints. We focus on a phenomenon of segregation where the separation of grains by size or mass is driven by spatial gradients in the uctuation energy of the grains. We report experiments carried out in microgravity with a shear cell shaped as a race track and containi...

Chaotic particle dynamics in viscous flows: The three-particle Stokeslet problem

It is well known, that the dynamics of small particles moving in a viscous fluid is strongly influenced by the long-range hydrodynamical interaction between them. Motion at high viscosity is usually treated by means of the Stokes equations, which are linear and instantaneous. Nevertheless, the hydrodynamical interaction mediated by the liquid is nonlinear; therefore the dynamics of more than tw...
